Eine der beeindruckendsten archäologischen Stätten Griechenlands ist zweifellos die Athener Akropolis mit ihrem Athena-Tempel, dem weltberühmten Parthenon, in dem die von Phidias geschaffene berühmte Kultstatue der Stadtgöttin Athena beherbergt war. Weithin sichtbar leuchtet der aus pentelischem Marmor erbaute Tempel im berühmten attischen Licht und krönt den uralt heiligen Athener Burgberg. Der Blick von hier oben reicht weit über das riesige Häusermeer der Großstadt bis hin zum Hafen von Piräus.

Die Siedlungsspuren auf der Akropolis weisen bis in die Jungsteinzeit zurück. Zunächst diente die Akropolis der Verteidigung und wurde später zum heiligen Tempelbezirk ausgebaut. Nach der Zerstörung des alten Haupttempels durch die Perser im Jahr 480 v.Chr. wurde unter Perikles das Heiligtum unter der Leitung des bedeutendsten Künstlers der Zeit, Phidias, völlig neu gestaltet. Die Baumeister Iktinos, Mnesikles und Kallikrates schufen die großartige Eingangsanlage (Propyläen), den Parthenon und den kleinen Niketempel im Westen des Burghügels.

Der zweitgrößte Tempel auf der Akropolis ist das mehreren Göttern und Heroen geweihte Erechteion mit den berühmten Karyatiden der Korenhalle. Leider befinden sich die Giebelfiguren und der Fries des Parthenon bis heute im Besitz des Britischen Museums in London.
